The easiest way is to look at how old the blockchain is.  Ours dates back to 2012 so if the blockchain is any younger then that then it is a scam.

We don't really do giveaways.  We have decentralized governance which means that if you have a masternode you can put in proposals for TRC for things that you think will help TRC or the world.  Basically you can get paid for your time improving Terracoin.
