This Global Vacuum Presents Huge Opportunities for Crypto

In some regions, over 50% of the population are unbanked and the problem is much worse for women, according to a quarterly review by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), which acts as a central authority for the world’s leading central banks.

In a special feature on innovations in payments, included in the review, Morten Linnemann Bech, Head of Secretariat of the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures at BIS, and Jenny Hancock, Member of Secretariat at the same Committee, argue that traditional banking services are still yet to reach large swathes of the populations in parts of the Middle East and North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, with women particularly affected.

Crypto Market Sentiment Keeps Tumbling

After reaching the highest score of 6.23 two weeks ago, the combined moving average 7-day market sentiment for the top 10 coins by market capitalization is still dropping, falling from 5.63 last week to 4.84/10 this week, according to Omenics, a crypto market sentiment analysis service.

Once again, the drop in market sentiment is visible across the board - most cryptocurrencies have gone down by double digits percentage-wise. Compared to the last week, there are no more coins in the positive zone, as all of them fell back into the neutral zone. But not all things are bad - none of the top coins have reached the negative zone yet, so the overall sentiment is neutral.

Bitcoin Too Young to Be Predictable But it Has a Major Advantage

While traditional markets experience coronavirus fears fuelled volatility, it might be still too soon to tell how bitcoin (BTC) would really perform during a period of serious financial turmoil. However, the fact that bitcoin is a “trustless asset” might be a major advantage in difficult times.

Banking Trojans Could Be Used to Target Your Wallet & Crypto Exchange

Cryptocurrency traders, blockchain and crypto firms have been warned to prepare for an intensified spate of cybercrime-related raids, with nasty new strains of malware already circulating.

Per a report compiled by ThreatFabric, criminals have been deploying sophisticated new programs in an attempt to snare unsuspecting companies and individuals. And although most of these have been developed to target online banking platforms, they are often just as effective when it comes to compromising crypto exchanges and wallets.

Well Functioning Government Might Make Private Cryptos Obsolete - IMF Official

If a sovereign government can maintain its creditworthiness and a central bank can guarantee effectiveness of its monetary policy, “it’s hard to imagine private digital currencies being used widely both within China and abroad,” according to Dong He, Deputy Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Devs, Dapps Leave Steem Ecosystem Due to Justin Sun Prompted Backlash

A major backlash between new Steem (STEEM) investors and its community forced some of the developers to resign while some Steem dapps (decentralized apps) are being removed in a sign of protest. Meanwhile, the market seems to be unmoved by the conflict as STEEM price is up 1.4% in a day.

The week started with the move to allegedly overthrow user-elected network validators, utilizing users' own funds against them, made by Tron (TRX) and its supporters within the Steem network and its popular app, content sharing platform Steemit. The community has turned against Tron's CEO Justin Sun, but also the exchanges that apparently aided this move that is seen as the confirmation of Steem community's fears that Tron wants to assume control over the platform.

India's Crypto Ban Overruled, But the Battle is Far From Over

Cryptocurrency exchanges have seen a victory in India. The country's banks can welcome their customers dealing with crypto again, but the fight is still not over, and the ban could still be passed, as there are more hurdles along the way.

Back in 2018, the central bank gave an order to all financial institutions to stop their crypto-related deals with businesses and individuals, which had sunk trade volumes and exchanges in the country had to close their doors. India’s Supreme Court has listened to concerns and agreed with petitions by crypto exchanges, startups and other industry members, and it has overturned a crypto ban previously imposed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), allowing banks to handle cryptocurrency transactions from exchanges and traders, reports Reuters.

Xiaomi Makes Another Move Into Blockchain With New Joint Venture

It looks like the Chinese smartphone and electronics giant Xiaomi is taking its blockchain plans more seriously. Recently, the company set up a joint venture to focus on new business areas such as blockchain, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI).

The Hong Kong-listed Chinese giant has been eyeing blockchain since 2017 and the recent move shows Xiaomi's ambition to contend with the ranks of Alibaba and Tencent in the heated blockchain race.

Bitcoin-powered Alternative to Five Peso Note Issued in Argentina

Argentina has phased out its popular five peso note – but a cryptocurrency company has issued something of a digital replacement – in the form of a commemorative coin with a value redeemable in bitcoin (BTC).

Per TyN Magazine, the five peso bill featured a portrait of the 19th-century historical figure José de San Martín, known as “El Libertador of Argentina.”

Facebook’s Libra Could Become a Multi-coin Payments Network

Facebook’s Libra project could turn into a network that accepts a wide range of coins, including central banks-issued digital fiats.

Despite previously released plans to develop its own digital currency, the social media giant and its Libra Association partners are now reportedly considering turning the initiative into a payments network – perhaps allowing the project to bypass some of the regulatory hurdles that have so far blighted its progress.

Beijing Pilots Blockchain-based Invoicing

Beijing, China’s capital, has started piloting blockchain-based electronic invoicing in an attempt to reduce costs, Beijing Municipal Tax Service announced.

A parking service operator already issued the municipality’s first blockchain invoice on Tuesday. Now in Beijing, all parking lots have opted-in to go paperless, as the municipality aims to “reduce operating costs, save resources, allow consumers to keep invoices more conveniently, and create a healthy and fair environment.

Crypto Custody Could Help Keep South Korea’s Biggest Exchanges Afloat

South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges have been suffering as trading volumes continue to remain low or stagnant in what was once one of the world’s busiest bitcoin (BTC) and altcoin markets.

The downturn in trading has already seen many exchanges go out of business in recent months. And cryptocurrency industry insiders in the country have told Cryptonews.com that “mass closures” are highly likely in the exchange business if trading figures do not rise soon.
