Am not following when you said 20% of the value is lost?
The hardware wallet takes up charges because i dont experience such or rather the coin you holding will lose value. Because i have a hardware wallet even when it was just $100 and still using it.

You are right. I did not make it clear. To secure assets, I have an extra cost. This will be deducted from my profit. If I plan to hold and add funds, then it makes sense. I would like to spend for a hardware wallet, when the price of it, is less than 5% of the value of the assets I want to secure.

As I am fairly new to the Altcoin scene I am learning as I go along.

I have recently installed a couple of wallets on my desktop on which I have enabled Staking.

I just wondered how safe it is to leave these wallets staking in the background, obviously as they increase in value over time, the risk of loss becomes bigger.

Is there any precautions I should be taking on top of the wallet encryption.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Beyond waves wallet I do not agree that desktops are safe

If you have a slow internet connection, yes, you are right, it is difficult to synchronize. I use Electrum wallet, that has been ported to many cryptocurrencies. The good think of Elecgtrum, is, that it has it's own network of servers, that keep the blockchain, so no sync is needed. These kinds of wallets, are called light wallets, because they don't keep the blockchain. You may find a light wallet, that you control the private keys, but you don't have to keep the blockchain. With a light wallet, there is no blockchain sync phase.

I currently have a coin that requires a desktop wallet, everything is safe as long as the password and other security codes are not seen by others.
I recently downloaded the Atomic wallet to store my crypto assets and is still safe and running well

Good selection! I think atomic wallet is great, because you are introduced to atomic swaps. With Atomic swaps, exchanges, are obsolete. With atomic swaps, an on-chain transaction with special timed-locked contracts, helps you to exchange one cryptocurrency to another.

They are fairly safe and secure unless it’s our own mistake that could destroy it. Everything has a specific work and that’s till we allow it to run like that but if we do something silly then we shouldn’t be blaming them. I don’t use these Desktop Wallets but that’s because I don’t exactly have a lot of Cryptos but a lot of my friends do because they have over 5-6k investments on it. And that obviously makes sense too.

I think if you use this method in a way that is good for me, it will also be safe, and you can keep your private key well, so I'm sure it's also safe.

Well, I can only write from experience. I currently have Veil desktop wallet on my laptop and I do hot staking in the background. So far I have not had any problems with it. I only did a recent upgrade on the wallet and its still working fine. You just need to store your encrypted keys properly incase you have to uninstall or move to another desktop.

There's always hole when it comes to technology but however keeping your security to its fullest potential is far better than barely doing anything with the security. I mean, hacker will have a harder time when it comes to dealing with hardware wallet. Even better if you use anonymous coin like veil that put security to its main priority because veil is basically a privacy based coin.

I agree with you, I'm not currently using a desktop wallet. Because I think it's too complicated and inefficient. Better MEW or wallet for smartphone

I would say every wallets are safe until and unless you compromise your private keys
Without access to your private keys or your laptops or desktop apis

You are definitely free from hacks
