How safe are desktop wallets ?
« on: March 18, 2019, 05:49:07 PM »
As I am fairly new to the Altcoin scene I am learning as I go along.

I have recently installed a couple of wallets on my desktop on which I have enabled Staking.

I just wondered how safe it is to leave these wallets staking in the background, obviously as they increase in value over time, the risk of loss becomes bigger.

Is there any precautions I should be taking on top of the wallet encryption.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I do not think you should have any more than this. Since you have encrypted it and a safe secret agent. If you had two or more portfolios.

I think that no matter you do the safety to your desktop, it still easily hacked by hackers if you’re not careful by clicking in the phishing link

That depends on the project whether their wallets have virus/malwares. Always be careful in downloading altcoin wallets, for your funds to be always safe.

Before you ask how safe is the funds inside this wallets make sure that these wallets are legit and scanned, most hacks and keylogger usually come from this kind of wallets, my advice is to make a separate computer for this kind of wallets and do not use your main computer for staking.

Indeed, many hackers now even can steal the 6 digit of Authenticator, I don’t know how they can do it but I saw many cases that they can hack exchanges account with 6 digit confirmation too

any reason you aren't using a hardware wallet?
ledger is decent, althought trezor has a better fancier look to it.
the only issue i have ever heard with the current trezor is that it only fits my btc / eth wallets on it, though the newest release, which unfortunately hasn't been shipped yet is supposed to have better usage.

Basically, all wallet types can be safe as long as we know how to manage them correctly. The point is on how smart we can set everything to prevent loss and hacking. There are no wallets with 100% safe, it always depends on the users.

Yes, they are less safe, compared to Hardware wallets, and Paper wallets. They are safer compared to online wallets (web services).

I think it's safe to just use a desktop wallet as long as we add security to the wallet

The only care, that must be taken, for a desktop wallet, is to check the computer, if it has a trojan, that records keystrokes, and takes screenshots. These trojans are huge security threats, because they steal the passwords, from the keystrokes, and user names and web addresses are leaked by the screenshots.
