I don't know about "democracy" in the US but for me it looks not so bad as you describe. Comparing to many countries even in Eastern Europe (non-EU) US is still a good option for living. Didn't you think why are so many immigrants coming to the US?

Yes, your democracy is dying. The U.S has got what it takes to become an autocracy. Other democratic regimes are going to sink very soon in Hungary, Italy, Turkey, Philippines, Israel, Bolivia, and, probably, but less likely, France and United Kingdom. Established autrocracies, such as Russia and China, will get stronger, and Venezuela’s autocracy will become more firmly established on the course of the next two years or so. When you discuss something, you can express your opinion and say anything that you want. But when you write a task, you have to follow particular rules, so you're limited to one theme. It might be a reason, I guess:)
