Ethereum development partners approved the ProgPoW Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)-proof algorithm.

The ‘Programmatic Proof of Work ‘ is called ProgPoW. It is an extension of the Ethereum algorithm Ethash that is currently used and is intended to improve competitiveness and centralization for graphics cards. Two algorithm features allow these tasks to be achieved.

ProgPoW means that every internal memorizing loop is a randomly generated program based on a block number, i.e., one iteration of a problem-solving process. The program is designed to operate commodity GPUs efficiently and uses a large part of the GPU feature. ProgPoW changes the problem statement in mining regularly. GPUs can quickly adapt, reducing the efficiency gap compared with ASICs.

Given the development of the thinking that led to the delay in Ethereum’s move from work evidence to work evidence, some groups in the community have believed that ASIC manufacturers may have played on Ethereum’s current work – proof algorithm Ethash. Thus, ASIC miners begin to monopolize the network hazard rate, which leads to centralization threats.

ProgPoW uses all graphics card components in their entirety. ASICs have only one specific task to perform. That’s why they’re so good at selecting block solution combinations. But they can only do it – you can’t play video games with them. In contrast, GPU’s are flexible, both for mining and gaming applications. Random cache reads small-sized with a minimum delay. Cached read forces ASICs to respect GPU hierarchy rules. This also limits their performance and capacity.

Although many of the communities believe that GPU network optimization will allow more Ethereum users to compete for the new protocol – adjudicated Crypto – Money, Alexey Akhunov, a developer, is one who believes that large mining businesses will likely push these people away whatever type of chips are used.

As Hudson mentions in his blog, “IfDefElse,” a small community group, initially proposed the use of ProgPoW and that the Community of Ethereum considers integrating it into the next fork in the intelligent contraction platform.

The implementation and security of ProgPoW, along with its network effects, are of great concern. As these substitutes for the current proof of work algorithm, a technical algorithm audit is cautious and would alleviate these concerns and confirm that ProgPoW is the safe substitute for Ethash.

Ethereum Cat Herders currently has “identified two major tasks for ProgPoW review and audit,” Hudson said. These include assessing the sense of community towards ProgPoW’s implementation and also conducting ProgPoW’s “technical audit.”

A handy guide to the next ETH hard fork expected in October 2019

The long-debated Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 1057 about the Progressive Proof-of-Work (ProgPoW) consensus model is finally confirmed to be included in the next Ethereum hard fork named Istanbul in October 2019, as long as two third-party security audits confirm no technical issues that could cause a delay.

In the Ethereum core developers meeting on March 15, the proposed ProgPoW algorithm was brought on the table again and discussed. This time, the team agreed, with 94% favoring votes, to the implementation of ProgPoW, which is designed to allow for broader participation in the ETH network and close the mining efficiency gap between GPU and ASIC miners.

Being the world’s second largest blockchain, Ethereum poses so much influence to global traders. Since another important hard fork is approaching, we feel obliged to prepare a handy guide for our users to understand how the upgrade will affect the blockchain.

    Where is it from?

The development of the Ethereum blockchain is a very well-planned task. Before Ethereum was rolled out, core developers and project managers had already foreseen some possible challenges and improvements it would take in the future and created a road map to improve the efficiency of the blockchain. After the previous Constantinople upgrade and the upcoming Istanbul upgrade, Ethereum is moving towards the next generation of Ethereum 2.0.

    What is it for?

The spotlight of the Istanbul upgrade is on the implementation of the ProgPoW algorithm.

The ultimate goal of Ethereum is to become a decentralized global network supported by thousands of nodes. However, the existing Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus model, which was made famous by Bitcoin, has been found to be heavily energy-inefficient and prone to the 51% attack. As such, there have been voices over the years urging for migration of PoW to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) model. Instead of racing on expensive ASIC miners for higher hash rate and power in a PoW model, a PoS algorithm chooses the creator (or validator) of a new block in a deterministic way, depending on his wealth (i.e. the stake).

Many recent reports indicate that hash rate and power have become concentrated in fewer hands, like the mining giant Bitmain, putting Ethereum’s decentralization and security at risk. By weighing much less on computing power, the PoS consensus is said to be fairer for general miners and more environmentally sustainable.

But the migration takes time. Therefore, the ProgPoW was introduced as a transitional measure to narrow the mining efficiency gap.

It is also noteworthy that the Istanbul upgrade is the final hard fork before Ethereum steps into the Serenity (aka Ethereum 2.0) phase.

    What changes will it bring?

As described on Ethereum’s Github, ProgPoW is launched to “close the efficiency gap available to specialized ASICs.” To balance all miners’ opportunity to mine ETH, the ProgPoW algorithm is “pre-tuned for the most common hardware utilized” on the Ethereum blockchain.

After the Istanbul upgrade is rolled out, it is expected that the efficiency advantage of ASIC miners over GPU miners will decrease from 2x to 1.2x. In other words, ASIC miners will have less control of the network and GPU miners can benefit more.

In addition, Ethereum’s core devs will start working on the implementation of Serenity and PoS after Istanbul.

    When will it take place?

Here is a timeline of the important events regarding the Istanbul upgrade:
    • April 2019 – on the 17th, a core dev meeting will be held in Berlin to discuss the Istanbul upgrade
    • May 2019 – all new proposals for the Istanbul upgrade must be submitted for review
    • July 2019 – the 19th is the approximate soft deadline for major client implementations to test Istanbul’s compatibility
    • August 2019 – a testnet upgrade will be launched on Ropsten, Gorli, or ad hoc testnet
    • October 2019 – the Istanbul hard fork will roll out if no technical issues are found

The Ethereum network is  losing ground as developers switch to other projects, various experts told Bloomberg on March 28.

Ethereum, which debuted in 2015, initially provided a platform on which developers could build decentralized apps (DApps), conduct initial coin offerings (ICOs) and write smart contracts. Many saw it as being the successor to Bitcoin (BTC).

According to Bloomberg, developers are now opting for other platforms like EOS and Stellar. In January, only 28 percent of DApps users were on the Ethereum network, while the EOS network saw 48 percent and Tron accounted for 24 percent.

Co-founder of hedge fund Multicoin Capital Management Kyle Samani said “The simple reality is that until the last six-to-nine months, there were no other options besides Ethereum. Now there are."

Ikigai crypto hedge fund founder Travis Kling said, “Owning Ethereum today is a call option on what you think the network is going to be in the future. To the extent that Ethereum competitor projects get traction with developers, with users, with DApps built on top of the platform, that will be viewed by the market as being detrimental to the overall value of Ethereum, and that can have a negative price impact on Ether."

Others say that Ethereum’s block speed of roughly 13 seconds is beginning to lag behind other networks, which can purportedly confirm transactions in under a second.

Bloomberg notes that the majority of token offerings are still reportedly conducted on the Ethereum network, and that its dedicated base of developers will keep it competitive. A member of the Ethereum Foundation reportedly said:

“The thing that really shines about Ethereum is its vibrant community. Everyone keeps building and supporting the cause regardless of the markets. All of the recent progress on Plasma and Serenity (Eth2) really speak to that. ”

Earlier this weekend, Ethereum co-founder and prominent face in the crypto community Vitalik Buterin argued that the crypto community should evolve beyond the individualism associated with its early cypherpunk days.

On March 29, 2019, Raul Jordan, an Ethereum 2.0 co-lead at Prysmatic Labs, announced that Ethereum 2.0 Phase 0 Testnet would be released soon. The announcement, made through a blog post titled ‘Ethereum 2.o Serenity Testnet update – Closer than Ever,’ represents the second stage of Prysmatic Labs’ roadmap, the Sapphire, the developer said.

    The blog post read,

“Our plan is to release a public, single-client testnet for Phase 0 of the Ethereum 2.0 roadmap. We are currently targeting the v0.4 release of the official specification […]”

It further stated the main agenda of this testnet was to ensure that there was a network that was resilient to forks and validator inactivity, while also enabling new validators who want to participate in the PoS consensus to join the network, in accordance to its rules.

Phase 0 Testnet also instructs Ethereum coin holders on how to stake and deposit their coins to become validators of Ethereum 2.0. Additionally, the team will deploy “Validator Deposit Contract” on Goerli Testnet, the new Testnet of Ethereum, for the same.

    The blog further stated,

“Users can deposit 3.2 Goerli testnet ETH into this contract with their Ethereum 2.0 private key credentials, run a Prysm node, and then be queued into becoming an active, proof-of-stake validator in the network. Deposits are one-way, that is, the test ETH cannot be sent back to the Ethereum 1.0 Goerli testnet chain.”

The blog post also stated that each validator would be rewarded or penalized based on their behavior on the network, adding that the protocol “favors liveness”. This entails that the “chain can continue” even if a large portion of validators is offline. However, this would lead to the funds of these offline validators being penalized, thereby resulting in capital loss.

Purpose of the Testnet | Source: Prysmatic Labs

    Raul Jordan added,

“Our testnet will be a gradually evolving project that we hope the community uses as an opportunity to test how Ethereum 2.0’s beacon chain fares in practice out in the wild. We will include a monitoring portal for our cloud cluster anyone can see to inspect the health of the network […]”

Ethereum Proof of Stake Testnet Launches
    « Reply #262 on: March 31, 2019, 05:24:20 AM »

The ethereum 2.0 development teams have managed to keep to their target of a Proof of Stake (PoS) testnet launch this March with Nimbus announcing on Thursday the PoS Beacon chain single client testnet is now out. They say:

“We have a Nimbus-to-Nimbus testnet running, not just in a simulation on a single machine, but with a remote bootstrap node and people connecting to it – even from outside of Status!

This is a major milestone in the development of Ethereum 2.0, and while stability issues persist and bugs will happen, the fact that we now have a Beacon chain synchronizing across nodes that aren’t necessarily local to each other is a big deal.

We’ve named it testnet0 – this is the first in a series of testnets that will follow, each adding new features, scale and stability. During the first weeks, testnet0 will be frequently restarted to incorporate what we learn from feedback and monitoring.

This iteration is based on spec version 0.5.1 and uses 400 validators to secure the network, of which 50 are reserved for brave explorers – when you join us, you’ll get one randomly assigned to you.”
They then detail how you can join the testnet, with Nimbus being an ethereum 2.0 implementation client, similar to Geth or other eth 1.0 node clients.

It is maintained by Status, one of – if not the – biggest ethereum dapp by the number of developers and coding activity:

    Ethereum ecosystem visualized, March 2019.
This is the first step in ethereum’s biggest upgrade since the network launched close to four years ago.

Individuals across the world can now join the testnet and basically run the Beacon chain in a lab like environment to test and see whether it does what it is meant to do and, if not, fix any bug that comes up.

A cross-clients testnet is to then follow. There are numerous such clients, with Sigma Prime’s Lighthouse eth2.0 client and Status’ Nimbus seemingly being furthest ahead.

Nimbus has now beaten Lighthouse to it, with Prysmatic another “runner up” as well as others. Then there will be audits, and then the big launch.

Phase 0 is the Beacon chain. Phase 1 is storage sharding if we can call it that. Autumn for storage sharding spec freeze, sort of the skeleton now “unchangeable,” seems to suggest they’re moving quite a bit faster than expected.

If we follow that timeline, then presumably phase 1 goes out during winter, with the gigantic phase 2, or “full” sharding, perhaps out later next year.

Phase 2 will considerably increase ethereum’s capacity. While phase 0 provides ethereum with a return on investment by putting your eth in a “savings account” or by giving it to Coinbase to do that for you.
It is effectively replacing miners with token holders. Right now, giant industrial farms vote within the rules of the code on what is the “true” history of transactions and thus who owns what. The Beacon replaces that with 32eth accounts voting for effectively the same thing so rather than proving you’re a real person and thus non sybilable by solving useless maths equations, you do so by showing 32eth.

The Proof of Work (PoW) chain will continue operating for some time in parallel with the PoS chain. PoW, however, will be less important to security so block rewards will reduce considerably to 0.6 eth per block.

The stakers in addition will get ◊0.22, so eth will effectively have a halving+ this Autumn if progress continues at the same pace or faster.

Ethereum - Ecosystem Support Program: Allocation Update, Q1 2020

The Ecosystem Support Program is an arm of the Ethereum Foundation dedicated to providing financial and non-financial support to projects working to help Ethereum grow and thrive.

We recently published an update detailing how the Ecosystem Support Program spent 2019, and how we allocated financial support throughout the year. Going forward, we’ll be sharing allocation updates on a quarterly basis.

2020 got off to a strange and difficult start, but Ethereum’s builders have kept on building through it all. The ESP team are grateful to be able to continue supporting teams as they work to make Ethereum better and stronger than ever.

We awarded a total of $2,564,000 in financial support over the first quarter of 2020. These funds went toward a wide variety of projects, from those using cryptoeconomics to incentivize quality content suggestions on social media, to critical work on Eth1 client diversity, interoperability, continued progress on Eth2 clients, and more.

Ethereum (ETH) - Released New Geth Version 1.9.14 - Pink Marble

Geth v1.9.14 is a regular maintenance release, but is also packs a punch with some interesting new features!

Ethereum mainnet currently contains over 700M transactions. Each full node maintains a search index, stating that transactions with hash H is stored in block B. This allows you to look up an arbitrary transaction from the past (at a significant storage cost). But how often do you look up transactions from years ago?

Geth v1.9.14 ships a --txlookuplimit flag, which specifies the number of recent blocks you want to maintain the search index for (by default it's 0 = since genesis). At its most extreme, you can set it to 1, to prune all past indexes. At the time of release, this reduces your LevelDB SSD footprint by 32GB! You can modify this flag at will, Geth will unindex/reindex in the background based on the current setting. If you unindex a lot of transactions, you might need to compact your database to reclaim the space immediately via debug.chaindbCompact().

Deleting transaction indexes locally is fine since they are not used in consensus nor in synchronization, so network health is unaffected. Light servers for now do need to maintain the full index since light clients rely on them. Huge props to @rjl493456442 and @holiman for this work (#20302).

Ethereum (ETH) Released Solidity Version 0.6.8

This release of Solidity fixes three important bugs in the code generator:

a missing callvalue check for constructors
a bug connected with array slices for arrays containing dynamic types
literal strings containing backslash characters in connection with ABIEncoderV2

    In addition to that:

we introduced a recommendation to use SPDX license identifiers for all source files which are also stored in the contract metadata
it is possible to access the min and max values of an integer type directly
    WebAssembly support has been extended

    Important Bugfixes:

Add missing callvalue check to the creation code of a contract that does not define a constructor but has a base that does define a constructor.
Disallow array slices of arrays with dynamically encoded base types.
String literals containing backslash characters can no longer cause incorrect code to be generated when passed directly to function calls or encoding functions when ABIEncoderV2 is active.

    Language Features:

Implemented type(T).min and type(T).max for every integer type T that returns the smallest and largest value representable by the type.

    Compiler Features:

Commandline Interface: Don't ignore --yul-optimizations in assembly mode.
Allow using abi encoding functions for calldata array slices without explicit casts.
Wasm binary output: Implement br and br_if.

    Bugfixes:

ABI: Skip private or internal constructors.
Fixed an "Assembly Exception in Bytecode" error where requested functions were generated twice.
Natspec: Fixed a bug that ignored @return tag when no other developer-documentation tags were present.
Type Checker: Checks if a literal exponent in the ** operation is too large or fractional.
Type Checker: Disallow accessing runtimeCode for contract types that contain immutable state variables.
Yul Assembler: Fix source location of variable declarations without value.
We especially thank all the contributors that made this release possible:
