Cryptographic currencies – including Bitcoin – have created questions about our technologies of exchange and value. These digital, decentralized currencies have become associated with waves of speculation, payment startups, and even criminal activity including drug trafficking and theft. Are they worthless – or the future of money?

NYU’s Department of Media, Culture and Communication will host “Media of Exchange: A Symposium on Cryptographic Currencies” on Wednesday, March 4, from 4-6 p.m. at 239 Greene Street, 8th Floor. The symposium will situate cryptographic currencies within debates in media studies and the social sciences, encompassing economic and technical issues as well as broader social and cultural phenomena.

The symposium’s participants will consider issues such as money’s relationship with the state and other financial institutions, how cryptocurrency infrastructures can be used beyond monetary exchange, and how cryptographic currencies can change our understanding of property, personhood, and privacy.
