Bitcoin mining’s future is green?
« on: October 18, 2020, 09:45:35 PM »
"Let’s take a look at the Bitcoin Mining Map that indicates a close estimate of the geographic distribution of the global BTC hash rate. China, of course, is the uncontested king, making up more than 65%. Following China are the United States, Russia and Kazakhstan, which are neck and neck at 7,24%, 6,90% and 6,17%, respectively.

Most of Bitcoin mining in Russia takes place in the famous Siberian region, which has also been a key spot for aluminum production since the 1960s.

Another key aspect is Siberia’s infamous climate, where it’s cold nine months of the year. If there’s anything that this kind of weather is good for, it’s hosting a datacenter stuffed with large ASIC units running at full capacity. Anyone who has ever tried running a mining rig at home during summer will likely know what I mean."

Article: Bitcoin mining’s future is green, and Russia has the best chance

I don't think hydroelectricity is a green energy source, because they affect the environment so much when we need to deforest and destroy the biosphere. Even if it's wind power or solar power, huge investments and hard-to-recycle waste after their lifecycle is a problem. And so, the BTC mining industry can't really be green.
Will BTC be able to follow ETH, use POS in the future to escape the energy scandal?

With the recent news bringing attention to the power consumption of crypto mining, in the short term we are going to see a move towards more renewable energy sources for providing the energy... big investors in the space will demand this. Longer-term we might see POS favored over POW.

Renewable energy is probably the best direction for the future, but as you said, what you do with the waste after the lifecycle of a windmill or solar panel ends is a big issue. In some cases, these methods fail to make up for the environmental impact of conventional electricity production before their lifecycles end. So we have to carefully evaluate when deciding which is better.

It can be good for future mining, there will be no longer bad issues about mining energy. Because of this issue, many miners have moved from China to another country, which will lead to a new era of mining. In the future, China won't have the power in the mining sector anymore. I hope it can bring stability to crypto mining, no China FUDs anymore.

Bitcoin mining consumes huge amounts of energy, a big percentage of the consumed energy comes from fossil fuels, such as coal, that releases CO2 and has a significant impact on the environment and contributes to climate change. Bitcoin investors are increasingly interested in where and how cryptocurrency is mined because they refuse to buy a cryptocurrency that is created in a way that significantly burdens the environment and consumes excessive energy. Bitcoin has the possibility to be extracted using renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal etc. Until recently, almost 56% (updated: July 2021) of cryptocurrency mining was based on renewable energy. The ever-increasing number of coal miners aims to reduce CO2 emissions and meet investor requirements. Mining is rapidly becoming more efficient and powered by more sustainable energy sources than any other country or industry, so yes, the bitcoin mining future is green.
